Co-facilitated by Meena Srinivasan
Award-winning leader and co-founder of Transformative Educational Leadership (TEL), TEDx speaker, and author of SEL Everyday, Integrating Social and Emotional Learning with Instruction in the Secondary Classroom
This Community of Practice (CoP) is a place for K-12 educators to connect, learn, question, and expand their capacity for teaching a wide variety of social and emotional skills within the context of everyday instruction.
During our CoP, you’ll engage in Meena Srinivasan’s online course and book. We’ll start with the foundational principles of SEL, and then explore (5) high leverage practices for integrating SEL with subject matter instruction. Throughout our SEL Everyday CoP, we’ll investigate equity, culturally responsive teaching, and community circles as supports to creating connected, trusting relationships among students. Meena’s course includes a whole section on Mindfulness, so we can build collective capacity for our own practice as well as engaging our students in cultivating mindful awareness practices that increase focus and attention, reduce stress, and improve emotion regulation.
Join us! Please complete this registration form by February 29th.
What will we do together?
Gather as a community of practice for six sessions. Each session will take place virtually from 3:30 – 5:00 PM.
- Session 1: March 6, 2024 (Wednesday)
- Meet and experience Meena Srivivasan, a contemplative leader, celebrated speaker and author of SEL Every Day: Integrating Social and Emotional Learning with Instruction and explore your WHY. Learn the three buckets of SEL, deepen understanding of the equity constructs related to the five (5) core SEL competencies, and explore SEL in the context of other site and district initiatives. You’ll also self-reflect on your own strengths and areas for growth related to integrating SEL with instruction. How to apply for graduate units will be addressed.
- Session 2: March 20, 2024 (Wednesday)
- Explore two (2) high leverage SEL practices, academic discussion and cooperative learning, in the context of subject matter instruction.
- Session 3: March 27, 2024 (Wednesday)
- Explore three (3) additional high leverage SEL practices, student reflection and assessment, student voice and choice, and restorative practices. Select one of the five high leverage practices for an inquiry into practice. Over the next few weeks, we invite you to plan and teach lessons using that practice (one class or subject area), and reflect on what you notice in terms of student growth and development and class culture/climate.
- Session 4: April 10, 2024 (Wednesday)
- Our focus will be on creating community and conditions for learning. We’ll review the research on relationships, and engage in Community Circles focused on building connected, trusting relationships and a culture of belonging.
- Session 5: April 24, 2024 (Wednesday)
- We’ll explore Meena’s mindfulness resources and facilitator guides, and think about how they might serve you and your students. Then, we’ll take time to share and reflect on your implementation of a particular high leverage SEL practice you tried out with your students.
- Session 6: April 30, 2024 (Tuesday)
- Embodied Teaching and Learning with Meena Srivivasan. In this special session, explore what embodiment is, why it matters and how to cultivate it in ourselves and in our learning communities. Building upon the fields of mindfulness, trauma informed approaches and culturally responsive practices, this session will create a foundation for inviting participants into a deeper understanding of how they can create opportunities for embodiment and the conditions for belonging in their educational spaces.
