Notice of Provisional Appointment to the Santa Cruz County Board of Education

A vacancy has occurred on the Santa Cruz County Board of Education by reason of the resignation of Edward Estrada, effective August 8, 2025. The resignation was filed in the office of the Santa Cruz County Superintendent on August 5, 2025. Edward Estrada represented Trustee Area 4.

On September 18, 2025, the Board of Education provisionally appointed Stacey Kyle to fill the vacant position, effective the same date. Trustee Kyle has taken the oath of office and provisionally assumed all of the duties of a member of the County Board of Education as of that effective date.

To challenge the provisional appointment, a petition calling for a special election, containing the valid signatures of at least 1.5 percent (1.5%) of registered voters in the district at the time of the last election, must be filed in the office of the County Superintendent within 30 days of the date of the provisional appointment. Pursuant to California Education Code § 5091, because the 30th day falls on a weekend, the petition must be filed no later than Monday, October 20, 2025. If no such petition is filed or the petition does not have sufficient valid signatures from registered voters, the provisional appointment of Stacey Kyle shall become final.
