The 2023-2024 “Every Classroom a Green Classroom” Teacher Leadership Institute for Sustainability launched in October with a new teacher cohort representing all grades TK-12 and nine different districts and charters. The goal of the Institute is to build teachers’ capacity for integrating environmental literacy and student-driven environmental action into core instructional goals. Last year’s cohort of teachers engaged 1,900 students in environmental action and outdoor learning as part of instruction in science, English, history-social science, health, math, and engineering. Projects this year are taking shape and include action projects like habitat restoration, adding pollinator gardens to campus, supporting migratory species, conserving water, protecting wetlands from pollution, reducing food waste, creating school compost systems, and reducing school food packaging waste.
