The Summer Student Trustee Academy is returning for 2025, with sessions beginning June 24!
Over six sessions, high school students will explore the inner workings of school boards and the impact student trustees can have in shaping educational experiences across Santa Cruz County. Participants will gain an inside look at local education governance and develop key skills to prepare for the role of student trustee on their respective school boards.
The Academy is co-facilitated by Santa Cruz County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Faris Sabbah and Andres Ortiz, Student Leadership and Engagement Coordinator at the Santa Cruz COE. Sessions include guest speakers with expertise in education law, fiscal policy, and public speaking.
The program culminates in a formal presentation to the Santa Cruz County Board of Education in July, where students will have the chance to share their learning and speak directly to board members. Those who complete all six sessions will receive an iPad to support their ongoing leadership and governance development—and to use at the board table as student trustees.
This is an ideal summer opportunity for students interested in how schools and school districts are governed, how educational policies are shaped, how budgets are managed, and how student voices can influence decision-making.
The Academy is open to all Santa Cruz County high school students entering grades 9-12 in the 2025-26 school year. All students with an interest in leadership and governance are encouraged to apply, with priority given to incoming student trustees in any Santa Cruz County school district. Participation is free.
Applications are due by Friday, June 6, 2025.
