Dear community member,
In a perilous moment for democracy, it has never been more important to empower our youth with the tools to shape the future.
Understanding the importance of fostering civically engaged youth, California has designated this and next week as High School Voter Education Weeks. Students are invited to learn more about the electoral process — and how to get involved — with resources and support provided by California Secretary of State Shirley Weber, the CDE, and numerous state and local partners.
By supporting young people to step into the democratic process, we empower them to influence and take ownership over the direction of our community and nation.
The key message is this: You don’t need to be 18 to get started and make an impact. Youth in California can pre-register to vote starting at age 16, volunteer as student poll workers, and help others get registered to vote. And, as always, they can use their most powerful tool to make an impact on any issue on the ballot — their voice.
Of course, our schools teach civics, and foster civic engagement, all year round. This is a time, however, when we invite schools, families, and community partners across Santa Cruz County to place a special emphasis on raising awareness about civic engagement and the range of opportunities to learn about the electoral process, explore pathways to civic involvement, and take meaningful steps toward becoming lifelong voters and leaders. Please help us amplify these important opportunities for youth:
I’m also pleased to share that, in partnership with the Santa Cruz County Clerk Tricia Webber, and Cabrillo College, the COE is bringing back the Youth Civics Summit this winter — an event convening 11th graders from schools across the county to engage with elected officials and explore issues around voting and elections.
The Civic Summit takes place February 27, 2025, at Cabrillo College. Schools are receiving information directly about how to register, and we’ll have much more to share about this exciting event soon.
Finally, please join me in congratulating Stacey Kyle on her appointment to represent Trustee Area 4 on the Santa Cruz County Board of Education! Trustee Kyle brings a wealth of experience in education and community service, along with a deep commitment to equity and student well-being.
Yours in education and equity,
Dr. Faris Sabbah
Santa Cruz County Superintendent of Schools
