Dear community member,
The Santa Cruz COE is proud to participate in the 2023 Holiday Food and Fund Drive hosted by Second Harvest Food Bank, which launches today and runs through January 15.
I have the honor of serving as co-chair for this year’s campaign along with Susan True, CEO of the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County.
Hunger remains a significant issue in our community, and youth are especially vulnerable. In fact, our latest data suggests that 1 in every 10 children in Santa Cruz County is experiencing food insecurity. Food insecurity affects students’ ability to learn and grow, impacting concentration, memory, mood, and so much more.
Second Harvest is an incredible organization that makes an outsized impact in our community. The oldest food bank in California, it serves an staggering 65,000 people each month. And it does so efficiently, thanks to relationships with farmers, suppliers and volunteers: Each dollar raised through the Holiday Food and Fund Drive provides three meals for individuals experiencing hunger in our community.
If you are able, I encourage you to consider participating in one or more of the following ways:
Support the COE’s campaign
Start a campaign for your school or organization
Volunteer with Second Harvest Food Bank
Together, we can make a difference in our community for those experiencing hunger.
Yours in education and equity,
Dr. Faris Sabbah
County Superintendent of Schools
