Dear community member,
The Santa Cruz COE is proud to participate in Second Harvest Food Bank’s 2024 Holiday Food & Fund Drive, ongoing now through January 15, 2025. I am honored to serve as campaign co-chair again this year, joined by Chris Murphy, President of the Santa Cruz Warriors, for my second and final year in this role.
Hunger is a growing issue in our community, especially among youth. Our latest data shows that 14% of children—more than 7,000 youth in Santa Cruz County—are affected by food insecurity, up from 10% a year earlier. This challenge impacts children’s ability to focus, learn, and grow, and it has a lasting effect on their health and well-being.
Second Harvest Food Bank continues to be a lifeline for those in need, serving nearly 65,000 individuals each month through its network of partner agencies—including schools and districts, many of which serve as distribution sites. Thanks to its strong relationships with local farmers, suppliers, and volunteers, Second Harvest can provide three healthy meals for every dollar donated.
If you are able, I encourage you to consider supporting this year’s Holiday Food & Fund Drive in one or more of the following ways:
Create a team for your school or organization
Support the COE’s campaign with a donation
Volunteer with Second Harvest Food Bank
Together, we can make a real difference in the lives of those facing hunger in our community. Thank you for your compassion and for joining us in this vital effort.
Yours in education and equity,
Dr. Faris Sabbah
County Superintendent of Schools
