A vacancy has occurred on the Santa Cruz County Board of Education by reason of the resignation of Alyssa Alto, effective April 15, 2024. The resignation was filed in the office of the Santa Cruz County Superintendent on April 10, 2024. Alyssa Alto represented Trustee Area 5.
On May 30, 2024, the Board of Education provisionally appointed Rachel Williams to fill the vacant position, effective May 30, 2024. Ms. Williams has taken the oath of office and provisionally assumed all of the duties of a member of the County Board of Education as of that effective date.
To challenge the provisional appointment, a petition calling for a special election, containing the valid signatures of at least 1.5 percent (1.5%) of registered voters in the district at the time of the last election, must be filed in the office of the County Superintendent within 30 days of the date of the provisional appointment, no later than July 1, 2024, pursuant to Education Code 5091. If no such petition is filed or the petition does not have sufficient valid signatures from registered voters, the provisional appointment of Rachel Williams shall become final.
