The Capitola Mall hummed with the excitement of student authors from across the county at the Student Authors’ Fair on May 5, 2018. The annual event, organized by volunteer teachers from the Santa Cruz County Reading Association with the financial sponsorship of the Santa Cruz County Office of Education draws hundreds of elementary school students and their families to peruse the student-created books on display. The students’ pride in their work is evident as they read their works with their families. A highlight every year is the author’s chair. Students are invited to sit in the purple, throne-like chair in front of an audience while they are masterfully interviewed about their work by San Lorenzo Valley Elementary School teacher Janet Stahl. By providing an opportunity for students to share their work with real audiences, the fair gives students motivation to invest the energy and patience needed to become effective writers.
