Over one hundred quaint, wooden toys were donated to the Santa Cruz Migrant/Seasonal Head Start program this week by the Santa Cruz Toymakers organization. These carved and painted animals and vehicles recall another place, another era—yet remind us that the joy and learning of young children can so easily be stimulated by a carefully chosen toy. The assortment of original wooden toys will be added to a brightly decorated bag of more typical toys given to each farmworker family with donations from dozens of COE employees.
The gift bag will be especially welcome as the end of the harvest season leaves many farmworker families without work until March. Migrant/Seasonal Head Start provides childcare to 112 young children in Watsonville during the harvest season, May through November.
