Alternative Education and Building Trades Pre-Apprenticeship Graduate Nails It!

Finding the right path after high school isn’t always easy—but for Wyatt York, persistence, hands-on learning, and hard work paved the way to a bright future in the trades.

Wyatt graduated from the Alternative Education program in January 2023. Like many young people, his journey included its share of ups and downs as he explored his interests and career goals. While attending Ponderosa, an Alternative Education school site in the San Lorenzo Valley, Wyatt seized the opportunity to enroll in Career Technical Education (CTE) courses—specifically, CTE Construction Tech in 2021.

Through this program, Wyatt learned a wide range of building trade skills, including:

  • Carpentry for framing, roofing, and trim work
  • Electrical wiring for residential systems
  • Plumbing for water and waste systems
  • Drywall and interior finishing for walls and ceilings
  • Siding, flooring, and insulation installation
  • Structural design and teamwork while helping to build a Tiny Home

Adult Education Program: Building the Next Step

After graduating, Wyatt continued his education by enrolling in the CALS Adult Building Trades Pre-Apprenticeship Program. There, he strengthened his technical expertise and earned industry-recognized certifications, including:

  • Multi-Craft Core Curriculum (MC3)
  • First Aid/CPR
  • OSHA 10

These achievements equipped him with the knowledge, confidence, and credentials to take his skills to the next level.

Welcome to the Union!

This month, Wyatt celebrated a major milestone—gaining entrance into the Local 405, San Jose Carpenters Union. His journey from Alternative Education to skilled trades professional is a powerful example of how determination and hands-on learning can lead to lasting success.

Way to go, Wyatt—you nailed it! 🛠️👏
