Last week, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation team spent three inspiring days with our CALS Career Technical Education (CTE) and Career Advancement Charter (CAC) programs. Their visit provided an invaluable opportunity to highlight the everyday experiences of our instructors and students, as well as the deeper impact our programs are making in the community.
Throughout their visit, the WASC team engaged with students, instructors, and administrators—gaining first-hand insight into the passion and purpose driving our programs. They participated in classroom observations and held thoughtful conversations with staff, all of which painted a clear picture of CALS’s commitment to empowering adult learners.
A special lunchtime gathering brought together local partners who play an essential role in our students’ success. This lunch also celebrated the unique journeys of several CAC and CTE adult students, who bravely shared how CALS programs have transformed their lives and opened new doors for personal and professional growth.
To showcase student talent in action, the high school Culinary Arts class—led by Chef McKinzie Lothrop—prepared and served a remarkable dinner for the WASC team, COE staff, and community guests. Students proudly presented their menu contributions and reflected on their learning experiences, demonstrating the real-worl
d skills and confidence they’ve gained through the program.
The visit served as both a celebration and a moment of reflection. It allowed the CALS team to recognize significant accomplishments over recent years while identifying opportunities to further grow and adapt as industries and student needs evolve. Most importantly, it reinforced the powerful blend of innovation, dedication, and heart that fuels CALS programs and supports adult learners on their paths to brighter futures.
