Career Advancement Charter (CAC): Empowering Adult Learners in Santa Cruz County

The Career Advancement Charter (CAC) program offers adult learners the unique opportunity to earn their high school diploma while building essential academic and technical skills for college and career success. Our program is designed to support the diverse needs of our students through flexible, independent study options and a variety of enrichment services that provide a holistic learning experience.

Community Dinner Tradition at Sequoia Schools

We are grateful to Vrinda Quintero, Edith Corrales, and the dedicated Sequoia Schools staff for their ongoing support in providing evening meals for students in our program. Vrinda hopes to make this community dinner a lasting tradition at Sequoia Schools, fostering a sense of connection and support for all our students.

Orientation for New CAC Students

To better serve our students, CAC now offers an in-person orientation designed to introduce new students to our available services and community partnerships. This orientation, held weekly in South County, allows new students to complete registration and assessments, setting them up for success from their very first day.

Child Care for Adult Learner Parents

Supporting our adult learner parents, CAC offers evening childcare from Monday to Thursday, 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Our caregivers engage children in learning and enrichment activities, enabling parents to focus on their studies with peace of mind.

ESL Classes for CAC Students and Community Members

Our English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are available to both CAC students and community members. Held at Sequoia Schools every Wednesday and Thursday from 5:15 PM to 7:00 PM, classes cater to various proficiency levels, with advanced sessions on Wednesdays and beginner classes on Thursdays. Enrollees receive a placement evaluation to ensure they join the class level that best supports their learning.

Zumba Classes: A Fun Addition to the CAC Program

We are excited to offer a new, high-energy **Zumba class** at Sequoia Schools Gym! Open to all CAC students, this fitness class combines Latin and international dance moves, making exercise both enjoyable and accessible. Zumba is held every Wednesday from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM.

Plazas Comunitarias: Basic Skills Education in Spanish

In partnership with the Watsonville Public Library, INEA (Instituto Nacional para la Educación de los Adultos), and the Mexican Consulate, CAC provides free **Plaza Comunitaria** classes. These Spanish-language classes support adult learners from Spanish-speaking countries in completing elementary or secondary education. Classes are offered at Sequoia Schools and the Watsonville Public Library, with additional support for students interested in earning a high school equivalency or enrolling in CAC to complete their high school diploma. For more information, call 831-768-3410.

Community Outreach: Expanding CAC’s Reach

The CAC team has been active in community outreach, connecting adult learners to CAC and CALS department resources. In August, our transition specialists collaborated with Cabrillo College at Fall Registration Fairs and participated in the Reiter Berry Farms Resource Fair in partnership with the Community Action Board to reach farmworkers with valuable resources and educational opportunities.

PSC (Probation Success Center): Supporting Education and Reintegration

CAC partners with the Santa Cruz County Probation and Corrections to offer support to clients working towards their high school education. At the Probation Success Center (PSC), high school teachers provide tutoring and classes in math, English, and computer literacy. Students earn credits toward their high school diploma while receiving additional resources, such as job search assistance, counseling, and parenting courses.

Enrichment Opportunities for Adult Learners

CAC students have access to a range of evening enrichment courses, including culinary arts, math tutoring, and ESL support. Students can also pursue dual enrollment and career education opportunities at Cabrillo College. Additionally, we offer work-readiness certifications through Certiport to enhance employability and job skills.

The Career Advancement Charter is proud to serve the adult learners of Santa Cruz County, providing pathways to education and career advancement that empower our students to achieve their goals. If you know someone who would benefit from joining CAC, please encourage them to reach out and begin their journey with us.
