As we wrap up 2025 and look ahead to the 2025–2026 school year, California is entering a pivotal moment in educator workforce development. After years of launching new initiatives, the state’s focus is on successful implementation, sustainability, and scale—ensuring that proven pipeline solutions truly reach classrooms and communities.
At ed.PATH, we see this shift as a major opportunity: to strengthen how educators are recruited, prepared, and retained, particularly in high-need and historically underserved areas. Below are some of the most important developments shaping the year ahead.
Local Opportunities: Santa Cruz County
For classified staff and future educators in Santa Cruz County, there are exciting opportunities right now.
- Santa Cruz Classified Employee Grant (SCCEG)
Eligible classified employees—or former classified staff now serving as intern teachers—may receive up to $4,368 per enrollment year to support tuition, books, and living expenses while completing a credential or degree program. Applications for 2025–2026 are now open. - Looking Ahead: Expanded Teacher Residencies
Santa Cruz County Office of Education currently operates an Education Specialist Residency in partnership with San José State University. Looking toward 2026–2027, plans are underway to expand this model through a new partnership with UC Santa Cruz, creating residency pathways for Multiple Subject and Single Subject candidates. - Summer Opportunity for High School Students
More information on the Future Educators Summer Academy will be shared soon!
