Twenty students from eleven high schools across Santa Cruz County came together on a Saturday for an Environmental Action Summit Leadership Kick-Off meeting at the Fitz Wetlands Educational Resource Center at Pajaro Valley High School.
The purpose of the Environmental Action Summit Leadership Group is to bring together students, community leaders, education leaders and environmental scientists to work together and plan for Santa Cruz County’s Environmental Action Summit that will take place on May 1st, 2020. We want to increase youth voice and engagement in community efforts focused on environmental sustainability, climate change, environmental justice, and implementation of local solutions.
We had students from Alternative Family Education, Aptos High, Cypress High, Delta High, Pacific Collegiate School, Pajaro Valley High, San Lorenzo Valley High, Scotts Valley High, Soquel High, and Watsonville High. The students were able to share what is currently happening at their schools, their perception of what is happening throughout our community, as well as what ideas they thought students at their schools would find to be the most important challenge about our environment. Students explored different solutions to help conserve and preserve the environment at a local, national and global level.
The students were engaged and eager to co-create the Environmental Action Summit and will continue to plan together throughout the Spring! Registration for the summit will open in March, 2020.
