The Building Trades Pre-Apprenticeship (BTPA) Program continues to grow and make a lasting impact in our community. Students who completed recent cohorts earned certifications in MC3, OSHA 10, and First Aid/CPR, graduating fully job-ready and employable.
This 10-week, no-cost program offers an intensive, hands-on experience designed to prepare adult learners for entry into fulfilling careers in the trades—fields that offer stability, purpose, and room for growth.
Welcoming Our New Instructor: Mark Lewis
We’re thrilled to welcome Mark Lewis as the new BTPA instructor! After retiring from a remarkable 40-plus-year career in the Trades industry, Mark decided to share his expertise and passion for craftsmanship with the next generation.
This year, Mark began teaching Alternative Education CTE Construction at Sequoia and 399 Encinal, and he’s already making an incredible impact. His extensive background, combined with his dedication to student success, promises to elevate the BTPA experience.
Mark is especially excited to bring innovative teaching methods and real-world applications into the classroom—ensuring that students not only build skills but also discover a deep appreciation for the trades. His leadership is a powerful testament to our ongoing commitment to providing high-quality education and support for every student.
The next BTPA class will begin in Winter 2026, and Mark is eager to guide a new cohort toward success in this high-demand industry.
Building Trades in Corrections
In collaboration with Rountree, the CALS BTPA cohort is proudly continuing this transformative program opportunity. Participants who successfully complete the program receive a $300 stipend and work boots to help them take their first confident steps into the workforce.
Beyond training, the CALS team provides personalized consultations and connections to local agencies that assist graduates with job searches and placement support. This holistic approach ensures that every student—regardless of their background—has the resources and encouragement to thrive in the trades sector.
A Lasting Commitment
The ongoing success of the BTPA program highlights the powerful impact of hands-on learning, dedicated mentorship, and community collaboration. With passionate instructors like Mark Lewis and continued partnerships with local organizations, we are building more than careers—we’re building futures.
